Pakistan

Pakistan's main draw is the north: the Hunza and Skardu valleys, which sit below K2 and Nanga Parbat. Most trips start in Lahore, whose Mughal-era old city is the lowland start.

Pakistan sits in South Asia, with India to the east, Afghanistan to the west and China to the northeast. The north is the main reason to go, where the Karakoram and Himalaya ranges meet. Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, has the Lahore Fort and Badshahi Mosque, both from the Mughal era. Karachi, on the Arabian Sea, is the country's largest city.

A trip here suits travelers who like mountain scenery, old cities and long road journeys. Many itineraries start in Lahore or Islamabad, the capital, and then climb north toward Gilgit-Baltistan. Spring and early autumn suit most of the country. The high passes open in summer and are often closed by snow in winter. Allow at least two weeks to cover one city and the north without rushing.

Five things to know before Pakistan

  1. Apply for the e-Visa before you fly

Tourists need a visa applied for in advance through the official portal, visa.nadra.gov.pk. UK government advice gives no processing time, so apply well before you fly and check the current rule for your passport. Visas and entry

  2. Check which regions your government advises against

The UK advises against all travel to Balochistan, most of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, some sections of the Karakoram Highway and areas near the Afghan border. Plan a route your insurance will cover. UK travel advice

  3. Travel north between May and October

The Khunjerab Pass to China and the high roads open only in the warmer months, and snow and landslides close them the rest of the year. Allow buffer days for road closures.

  4. Book the Islamabad to Gilgit or Skardu flights flexibly

Flights over the mountains cancel often in poor weather. The road alternative is long and parts of it run through areas covered by travel advice, so check the route before you commit. Getting around

  5. Dress conservatively everywhere

Loose clothing covering arms and legs is the norm, and women usually carry a scarf. Ask before photographing people, especially women, and near military sites.

Pakistan FAQ

Do I need a visa for Pakistan?

Yes. Apply for the visa in advance through the official portal, visa.nadra.gov.pk, and check the current rule for your passport. UK government advice gives no processing time, so apply early.

Is it safe to travel to Pakistan?

It depends on the region. The UK advises against all travel to some areas, including Balochistan and much of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while many visitors travel in Gilgit-Baltistan in the north. Read your government's current advice and check your insurance.

When is the best time to visit northern Pakistan?

May to October, when the mountain roads and the Khunjerab Pass are open. Late September and October add autumn color in Hunza with fewer visitors.

How do I get from Islamabad to Hunza?

By a short flight to Gilgit or Skardu and then road, or by a road journey of about two days. Some road sections are covered by UK advice against all travel, so check the current map and your insurance before you choose.

Can women travel in Pakistan?

Yes, many do, often with a local guide or on group trips. Dress conservatively, carry a scarf and expect a lot of attention in rural areas.
