Lagos is a large port city in southwestern Nigeria, spread across Lagos Island and the Mainland, with creeks and lagoons running through it. The historic center is on Lagos Island, where the National Museum, Freedom Park and the Idumota and Balogun markets sit near the financial district. Surulere is a center of Nollywood, while Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki have hotels, attractions, nightlife and Atlantic beaches.

You can see Yoruba culture at the John K. Randle Centre and the National Museum, and contemporary work at galleries such as Nike Art Gallery. Lagos music includes Afrobeats, highlife, juju, fuji and Nigerian hip hop. Local dishes include jollof rice, suya, eba with egusi soup and amala with ewedu. The city suits travelers planning a trip around culture, food and beach time. Its neighborhoods are spread across the lagoon, so plan your route between areas.
