Nigeria sits on the Gulf of Guinea coast in West Africa. Abuja is the capital, but most visitors start in Lagos, the largest city, where music, visual art and street food are the main draw. Further west, the southwest is the homeland of the Yoruba. The Osun-Osogbo sacred grove, beside the Osun River, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still a place of worship for the Osun goddess.
A trip here suits travelers who want a large city and a deep cultural history. Two things shape the plan. You need an e-Visa, which you apply for before you fly. Lagos traffic can turn a short drive into a long morning, so allow extra time between appointments. Government travel advice varies by state, so check it before you book. The dry months are the easier time to travel. A first trip works with about a week in Lagos and a few days in the southwest.
Five things to know before Nigeria
- Apply for your e-Visa before you fly
Visas on arrival are no longer issued. Apply on the Nigeria Immigration Service portal; the tourism visa allows one entry of 30 days within 90 days of issue. Tourism visa
- Fill in the digital landing card
Foreign visitors complete digital landing and departure cards online before arriving and before leaving Nigeria. Landing card portal
- Check which states the UK advises against
The UK advises against all travel to several north-east and north-west states and the riverine Niger Delta, and against all but essential travel to many others. Check before any road trip. UK travel advice
- Carry your yellow fever certificate
A yellow fever certificate is required for entry, with exemptions for very young infants and older adults. Keep the card with your passport. UK entry rules
- Book an airport pickup in Lagos
The drive from Murtala Muhammed Airport to Victoria Island or Ikoyi can take hours at peak times. Arrange a pickup through your hotel or host rather than finding a car outside.

Before you go to Nigeria
Nigeria FAQ
Can I get a visa on arrival in Nigeria?
No. Visa on arrival is no longer available and visitors apply for an e-Visa online. The tourism visa gives one entry of up to 30 days.
Is Nigeria safe to visit?
The UK advises against all or all but essential travel to many states, mostly in the north and the Niger Delta. Check the current list, and plan transfers in Lagos through your hotel or host.
When is the best time to visit Nigeria?
November to February is the dry season in the south. December is busy with festivals and visitors; the harmattan can bring dusty haze in January.
Can I use cards in Nigeria?
Cards and bank transfers are common in Lagos and Abuja, but carry some naira cash for markets and taxis. Tell your bank you are traveling.
How do I get around Lagos?
Ride-hailing apps are the usual way for visitors. Allow extra time because traffic and bridges between the mainland and the islands jam at peak hours.
