    Niger

Niger draws travelers to the Sahara, the Aïr Mountains and the trading town of Agadez, with the security situation to weigh first.

Niger is a landlocked country in West Africa with seven neighbors, including Nigeria, Algeria and Chad. Its capital, Niamey, sits in the southwest on the Niger River, which gives the country its name. More than 80% of the land is Sahara desert, and most people live in the less arid south and west. In the north, the Aïr Mountains hold Mont Idoukal-n-Taghès, at about 2,022 m the country's highest point.

Travelers go for desert scenery, Saharan rock art in the Aïr Mountains and Djado Plateau, and the old trading towns of Agadez and Zinder. W National Park in the southwest, shared with Burkina Faso and Benin, has elephants, buffaloes and kob. The Guérewol courtship festival and La Cure salée, held in In'Gall, bring nomad groups together. The north is desert, and hot periods regularly pass 40 °C. Security comes first in planning: Islamist militant attacks have hit the Tillabéri Region since 2019, kidnappings have happened in the north and west, and a military junta has governed since the 2023 coup.

Five things to know before Niger

    1. Read the current travel advisory first

Governments including the UK and US advise against all travel to all or large parts of Niger. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

    2. Check the US advisory as well

The US State Department rates Niger Level 4, do not travel. Niger also stopped issuing visas to US citizens and barred their entry in early 2026.

    3. Check visa rules for your passport before you fly

Most visitors need a visa arranged before travel; the UK points to Niger's embassy in Geneva. Rules can change at short notice, so avoid third-party visa sites. Visas and entry

    4. Carry a yellow fever certificate

Niger requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all arriving travelers aged nine months and over.

    5. Read your insurance policy before you book

Look for the clause on government travel advice. Specialist cover for high-risk areas exists but is expensive and often excludes the risks that matter most. Travel insurance
