Ghana sits on West Africa's Atlantic shore, with Accra as its capital and largest city. The coast is the main draw: about 560 kilometers (350 miles) of sandy beaches lined with palms, and more than 30 forts and castles. Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle are UNESCO World Heritage Monuments, and their history centers on the gold and slave trades. Inland, Kumasi was the center of the former Ashanti Empire.
The weather divides by region. The east coast is warm and comparatively dry, the southwest is hot and humid, and the north is hot and dry. Wli Falls is the largest waterfall in West Africa. Food is a reason to go too: banku and kenkey, both cornmeal staples, often come with fried fish or grilled tilapia and pepper sauce. Plan a few days on the coast, then add Kumasi or Wli Falls if your trip allows.
