Cape Coast is a coastal city in the Central Region of Ghana, on the Gulf of Guinea. Its main draw is Cape Coast Castle, a 17th-century fort where enslaved Africans were held before they were shipped across the Atlantic. The castle's history is tied to the trade that shaped this coast. Elmina Castle, a similar fort, lies a short drive west, and the two are often visited together.
Cape Coast also works as a base for the countryside. Kakum National Park is under an hour away by road, and its canopy walkway of suspension bridges runs among the treetops. Fishing boats land on the beaches in town. Two days cover the castle, the town and a day trip to Elmina, and a third day adds Kakum. November to March are the drier months and the most comfortable time to visit, while April to June bring heavy rain that can make forest trails muddy.

Read the guideCape Coast FAQ
Is Cape Coast worth visiting?
Yes, mainly for Cape Coast Castle, which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Ghana's forts and castles. The town also works as a base for Elmina and the coast.
How many days do you need in Cape Coast?
Two days cover Cape Coast Castle, the town and a day trip to Elmina. Add a day for Kakum National Park if you want the canopy walk.
How do you get to Cape Coast from Accra?
Take a bus or trotro from Accra by road. The trip usually takes two to three hours depending on traffic, so an early start helps for castle tours.
Can you visit Cape Coast as a day trip from Accra?
Yes, but the road takes two to three hours each way, so the castle tour and travel fill most of the day. An overnight stay gives you time for Elmina or Kakum.
Is Elmina worth visiting from Cape Coast?
Yes. Elmina Castle is another UNESCO-listed fort, and the town has a working fishing harbour. It is a short ride from Cape Coast, so it fits easily into a day.
