The Loyalty Islands, or Îles Loyauté in French, are a group of islands east of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. Three islands draw most visitors. Lifou and Maré are raised limestone, with cliffs, sinkholes and caves along the coast. Ouvéa is a low coral island with a wide lagoon and white sand beaches. Most residents are Kanak, and villages are led by customary chiefs, so some travelers stay with a tribe or walk through a village with a local guide.
Each island is a separate trip, because you reach each one by flight or ferry from Grande Terre. Plan at least three nights on one island, and more if you want to see two. The cooler, drier months from May to October suit beach days and walks. November to April is the wet season and cyclone season.

Loyalty Islands FAQ
Which Loyalty Island is best for a first visit?
Lifou, the largest and the one with the most to do: the Jokin cliffs, Jinek Bay, water-filled caves and vanilla farms. Choose Ouvéa for beaches and Maré for rugged scenery and a drive.
How do you get to the Loyalty Islands from Noumea?
By Air Calédonie flight of about 40 minutes from La Tontouta, or on the Betico 2 ferry, which takes at least 4 hours to Lifou or Maré and runs several times a week. The tourism board recommends flying for Ouvéa, Lifou and Maré.
Can you visit the Loyalty Islands as a day trip?
Not sensibly. A flight alone is about 40 minutes each way and the ferry takes at least 4 hours, so a night or more on the island is the realistic minimum. The tourism board calls only the Isle of Pines feasible as a day trip.
What is a tribal stay in the Loyalty Islands?
A night with a Kanak family or clan, usually in a traditional hut on a mattress over woven mats, with table d'hôte meals and activities such as preparing bougna. You are welcomed with the customary gesture on arrival.
When is whale season on Lifou?
The tourism board says humpback whales pass Lifou between July and September, and you may spot them from the Jokin cliffs. Those months are also among the cooler and drier ones, so they work for a general visit.
