Noumea is the capital of New Caledonia, a French special collectivity in the South Pacific, east of Australia. The city sits on the southwest coast of Grande Terre, the archipelago's largest island, where a long barrier reef encloses one of the largest lagoons in the world. The beaches are the bays along the coast, such as Anse Vata, where hotels, cafes and swimming spots lie close together. Downtown is near the port.
The main place to learn about Kanak culture is the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, designed by Renzo Piano on the Tina peninsula. Kanak people are the Indigenous Melanesian population of New Caledonia. Boat trips run to Amédée Island, where a lighthouse stands in a protected reserve. Plan three to five days to cover the bays, the cultural centre and one lagoon outing. The cooler, drier months from May to October suit walking and swimming, while November to April is hotter, more humid and falls in the cyclone season.

Noumea FAQ
How many days do you need in Noumea?
Two to three days covers the bays, the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, the market and one boat trip. Add a day if you want Amédée Lighthouse or an islet stay, and treat Noumea as the gateway before the Isle of Pines or the Loyalty Islands.
Is Noumea worth visiting or should you go straight to the islands?
Spend at least a night or two, because the international airport, the museums and most services are on Grande Terre and the island flights start from the same airport. Noumea is the cheaper and easier place for French-style food, shops and lagoon day trips.
How do you get from La Tontouta airport to Noumea?
By shuttle or rental car, about 45 minutes. The tourism board lists the Arc-en-ciel shuttle with or without a booking, other providers by advance booking only, and the Tontouta Express at 500 XPF a trip with four fixed stops.
Can you swim safely at Noumea's beaches?
Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons are the main city beaches. The tourism board says to avoid swimming near ports and moorings, river mouths, the Nouville peninsula, and at dawn, dusk or after heavy rain, when visibility is low.
Do you need a car in Noumea?
Not for the bays and downtown, which are linked by Tanéo bus lines N1 and 3 and by taxis. A car helps for the Tjibaou Centre, which has no bus route, and for drives beyond the city on Grande Terre.
