Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands off northwestern Malaysia, near the Thai border, in the state of Kedah. Only four are inhabited: the main island Langkawi, plus Tuba, Rebak and Dayang Bunting. Kuah, the largest town, is on the main island. The islands have been duty-free since 1987. Two-thirds of the main island is forest-covered mountains and hills.

Start with Pantai Cenang, the island's most popular beach and tourist area. The Langkawi Cable Car runs from Oriental Village to Gunung Mat Chinchang, where the Sky Bridge is. Kilim Karst Geoforest Park adds limestone caves and mangrove rivers, with boat trips along about 10 km of rivers, and Langkawi Geopark has held UNESCO World Geopark status since 1 June 2007. The dry season runs from December to February and the rainy season from March to November, so plan around the drier months.

Rules for Langkawi, checked

  • Check Malaysia's entry rules with the Immigration Department of Malaysia, including whether you need to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before you travel.
  • Duty-free status does not lift customs limits on alcohol and tobacco. Check allowances with Royal Malaysian Customs before you arrive by air or sea.
  • Dial 999 for police, fire or an ambulance anywhere in Malaysia.
  • Cover shoulders and knees and take off your shoes at mosques and temples.
  • Keep your passport with you for the Thai border formalities on the Ko Lipe ferry. The seasonal ferry runs only October to June, so check the timetable before you go.

Langkawi FAQ

Do I need a car in Langkawi?

It helps. Buses are rare and taxi fares add up. Rental cars are cheap by regional standards.

Is Langkawi really duty-free?

Yes, for many goods including alcohol and chocolate. There are limits on what you can take back to mainland Malaysia.

When is the best time to visit Langkawi?

December to March, when seas are calm and it is mostly dry.

How do you get to Langkawi?

Fly from Kuala Lumpur or Penang, or take a ferry from Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah on the mainland. Flights are quickest from Kuala Lumpur; ferries suit an overland route up the peninsula. Check ferry timetables before planning a late arrival.

How many days do you need in Langkawi?

Three or four days covers the beaches, the SkyCab, a mangrove boat trip and one island-hopping day. Add a spare day in the wet season, when boat trips and the cable car can be cancelled for weather.
