Mullerthal is a wooded region in eastern Luxembourg, close to the German border. It is often called Little Switzerland because of its sandstone rock formations, which rise out of the forest as tall pillars, arches and cliffs, with deep, narrow gorges cut by small streams. The region is built around marked hiking trails that run through the valleys and past the rock faces, so walking is the main way to see it.
Plan the trip around walking. Villages such as Berdorf and the town of Echternach are common bases, and the trailheads are spread across them. Echternach has more shops and services than the villages, which sit closer to the gorges. Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for hiking. Paths can be wet and muddy after rain, so bring shoes with good grip.

Can I visit Mullerthal without a car?
Yes, but the trailheads are spread across several villages. Check the bus timetable before you go and plan your loops around the service.
Why is Mullerthal called Little Switzerland?
The name Petite Suisse luxembourgeoise refers to the sandstone rock formations, which the name compares to Switzerland.
Which languages will I hear?
Luxembourgish, French and German are the official languages. English is common in tourist places.
