Luxembourg is a small country in western Europe, bordered by Belgium, France and Germany. Luxembourg City, the capital, sits on cliffs above two river valleys. Its old fortress is cut into the rock, and visitors can walk through the Bock Casemates, a network of tunnels. Lifts and steps connect the upper town with the Grund, the lower district along the Alzette river.
Day trips from the capital reach Vianden, where a castle rises above the town, and the Mullerthal, a region of sandstone rock formations and forest trails often called Little Switzerland. Echternach and Clervaux are also reachable by train or bus. Choose this trip if you want a city base with easy access to the countryside. Spring and early autumn suit hiking best. Plan at least two nights in Luxembourg City and one or two days outside it.
Five things to know before Luxembourg
- Ride trains, trams and buses free
Public transport across Luxembourg is free in second class, including trains, buses and the city tram. Only first class on trains needs a ticket.
- Use the public lifts between upper and lower town
The old town sits high above the Grund and Pfaffenthal. Free public lifts save the steep walk, including a glass lift with a view of the valley.
- Visit the Bock Casemates early
The fortress tunnels are narrow and fill with groups by late morning in summer. Go at opening time and bring a layer, since it is cool inside.
- Add Vianden or the Mullerthal
Vianden's castle and the rock gorges of the Mullerthal are each about an hour from the city by bus or train and bus, both free.
- Register under EES at your first Schengen border
Non-EU visitors give fingerprints and a face photo the first time they enter the Schengen area. Your days then count toward one shared limit of 90 in any 180 across all member countries. EES explained

Luxembourg FAQ
Is public transport really free in Luxembourg?
Yes, in second class on trains, buses and trams across the whole country. First class on trains still needs a ticket, and cross-border trips need a ticket from the border onward.
How many days do I need in Luxembourg?
One day covers the city, two if you add Vianden or a Mullerthal walk. Many visitors combine it with Belgium or the Moselle.
Is Luxembourg expensive?
Hotels and restaurants cost more than in neighboring Belgium or France. Free transport helps, and staying outside the center is easy.
What languages are spoken in Luxembourg?
Luxembourgish, French and German are official, and English is widely used in shops and hotels in the city.
Do I need a visa for Luxembourg?
Luxembourg is in Schengen. Many passports get 90 days in 180 without a visa, and most non-EU visitors register under EES at their first Schengen border.
