Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is a small Alpine country between Switzerland and Austria, known for Vaduz castle, Rhine valley vineyards and hiking around Malbun.

Liechtenstein is a small country of about 160 square kilometers between Switzerland and Austria. The Rhine runs along the valley floor, and the land climbs fast into Alpine slopes. Vaduz, the capital, sits at the foot of the hills, with the prince's castle above the town. The country has its own government and uses the Swiss franc.

Plan a trip around two areas: the valley towns and the mountains above them. Vineyards cover the slopes above the valley towns. Triesenberg, a village settled by Walser families, sits higher up, and Malbun, a small resort above it, is the base for hiking and winter sports. Summer suits the trails and vineyard walks, and winter suits snow at Malbun. Spend one day in the valley towns, or two or three days if you hike up toward Malbun. Trails and vineyards are the main reasons to stay longer than a day.

Five things to know before Liechtenstein

  1. Travel in via Sargans or Buchs in Switzerland

Liechtenstein has no airport and few trains. Most visitors take a Swiss train to Sargans or Buchs SG, then a local bus to Vaduz, or fly to Zurich.

  2. Pay in Swiss francs

The Swiss franc is the currency. Some places take euros at a poor rate, so use a card or francs.

  3. Walk a stage of the Liechtenstein Trail

The 75 km trail crosses all 11 municipalities and splits into day stages, several of them short walks from Vaduz.

  4. Head up to Malbun for hiking or snow

The mountain village of Malbun, reached by bus from Vaduz, has summer trails and a small ski area in winter.

  5. Count your days under Schengen rules

Liechtenstein is in the Schengen area, so your days here count toward the shared 90 in any 180. Most non-EU visitors register under EES at the first Schengen border they cross. EES explained

Liechtenstein FAQ

Do I need a passport to visit Liechtenstein?

There are no border checks with Switzerland or Austria, but carry your passport or ID card as you would anywhere in Schengen.

Can I visit Liechtenstein as a day trip from Zurich?

Yes. The train to Sargans or Buchs and a bus to Vaduz take roughly an hour and a half each way, which leaves time for the town and a short walk.

What currency does Liechtenstein use?

The Swiss franc. Cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Can I get a passport stamp in Liechtenstein?

Not at the border, since there is none. The tourist information center in Vaduz offers a souvenir stamp for a small fee.

Is one day enough for Liechtenstein?

One day covers Vaduz and a viewpoint. Stay a night or two if you want to hike from Malbun or walk several stages of the Liechtenstein Trail.
