Kuwait

Kuwait's towers, historic souks and Failaka Island ruins make a short Gulf trip, best in the mild winter and early spring.

Kuwait is a small country at the head of the Persian Gulf, bordered by Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Kuwait City, the capital, holds the seat of government, the main banks and the stock exchange. It sits on Kuwait Bay, and the Kuwait Towers are three towers, two of which also serve as water towers. Kuwait is one of the smallest countries in the world by land area.

Give a few days to the city and a day trip to Failaka Island, about 20 km off the coast. Failaka has Mesopotamian-style buildings, Hellenistic forts and Greek temples. Islam is the state religion and alcohol is banned, so dress modestly in public. Winter and early spring are the mild months, with winters averaging about 18°C, while summers average 42 to 48°C. Kuwait has no railway, so most people drive. Since February 2026, aerial attacks have hit Kuwait during the wider 2026 Iran war, so check official travel advice before you book.

Five things to know before Kuwait

  1. Check the regional travel advice before you book

Iranian strikes have hit locations in Kuwait and across the Gulf since July 2026, and flights can change at short notice. Read the current UK or US advice before you pay for anything. UK travel advice

  2. Get an eVisa or a visa on arrival

British citizens can apply for an eVisa online or get a visa at the airport; check your own passport on the official Kuwaiti eVisa portal. Carry a return ticket and a hotel booking, as border staff ask for both. Visas and entry

  3. Know that an Israeli stamp can stop you

The UK government warns that a passport with an Israeli stamp may be refused a visa or entry. If you have one, ask the Kuwaiti embassy before you travel.

  4. Plan around the heat from May to September

Daytime highs pass 40°C for months, and many people move between air-conditioned cars and malls. Walk the souq and the seafront in the early morning or after dark.

  5. Respect Ramadan hours and rules

Do not eat, drink or smoke in public between dawn and sunset during Ramadan. Restaurants and shops change their hours, and the dates move about 11 days earlier each year.
