Turin is the capital of Piedmont, in northwest Italy, on the Po River with the Alps to the west. It was the first capital of unified Italy, from 1861 to 1865, and that royal past shows in the Palazzo Reale, the Savoy palaces and long arcaded streets. The Egyptian Museum holds one of the largest collections of Egyptian artifacts outside Cairo, so give it at least half a day.
Plan two or three days for a city trip built on museums, cafes and food. Aperitivo is a local evening habit, and the city is tied to vermouth and gianduja chocolate, so save room for both. Winter is cold and often foggy, so spring and early autumn suit walking the city best. The core sights sit within walking distance of each other, which keeps each day manageable on foot.
Turin in five
- Book the Egyptian Museum before you goThe Museo Egizio is the city's main sight and one of the largest Egyptian collections outside Egypt. Buy a timed ticket on the museum's official site and check its opening days.Tickets and tours
- Ride the Mole Antonelliana lift for the viewThe tower houses the National Museum of Cinema, and a glass lift runs to a viewing deck. Check the museum's current hours and book if you want a set time.
- Do aperitivo as the locals doTurin is the home of vermouth and a big aperitivo culture. Order a drink and a buffet plate in the early evening in the Quadrilatero or Vanchiglia areas.
- Walk the arcades and use the metro and tramsKilometers of covered arcades keep you dry in rain and shaded in sun. Trams and a metro line cover the rest, and the center is largely flat.
- Plan Langhe trips by car or tourAlba, Barolo and the Langhe wine hills are about an hour south by road, with limited trains. Join a tour if you want to taste wine without driving.Compare day trips

Is Turin worth visiting?
Yes, especially for the Egyptian Museum, the Savoy palaces and Piedmont food. It is less crowded than Rome or Florence and has a calm, grand feel, so it suits a long weekend.
How many days do you need in Turin?
Two days cover the Egyptian Museum, the Royal Palace and the old center. Three add the Mole Antonelliana, a market and aperitivo evenings. Add two more for the Langhe.
Is Turin a good base for the Langhe?
It works if you want a city with a car or tour out to Alba and the hills. Alba itself is a better base for harvest season and truffle weekends, since evenings in the hills are the point.
What should you eat in Turin?
Bicerin (coffee, chocolate and cream), gianduja chocolate, vermouth, agnolotti and bollito misto. Many cafés date from the 1800s, and aperitivo plates are a cheap dinner.
How far is Turin from Milan?
About 1–1.5 hours on a fast train, and longer on regional trains. It also works as a one-way leg into France or Liguria, and a pass rarely beats a single ticket.
