Rimini is a seaside city on the Adriatic coast of Emilia-Romagna, in northern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Rimini and lies on the Riviera Romagnola, a strip of resorts that runs about 50 km from Cervia to Gabicce Mare. The main draw is the beach: a sandy, gently sloping stretch about 15 km long, with bathing establishments, theme parks and nightlife along the front. The railway station sits on the Bologna to Ancona line, the main rail link along the Adriatic.
The city has Roman roots too. The Arch of Augustus dates from 27 BC, and the Tiberius Bridge over the Marecchia was finished in 21 AD. Film director Federico Fellini was born and raised here, and the Fellini Museum spreads across Castel Sismondo, Piazza Malatesta and the Fulgor Palace. Sea breezes blow from spring to autumn, and summer is the season for swimming. July averages about 23.1 °C and January about 4.0 °C.
Rimini in five
- Choose a beach zone before you bookThe beach is divided into numbered bathing establishments with rented loungers and umbrellas, and free stretches are narrow. In July and August reserve a spot early.
- See the old center in the morningThe Arch of Augustus, the Tiberius Bridge and the old market lie close together in the historic quarter, about a short bus ride from the seafront. Go before the heat and the beach crowds.
- Use the train for the coast and RavennaRegional trains run along the coast to Riccione and Ravenna and inland toward Bologna. The Adriatic line also continues south to Puglia, but that is a long day, so plan stops.Ravenna
- Expect closures outside the seasonMany beach clubs and some hotels close from autumn to spring, and the seafront is quiet. Check opening dates, and ask about the city tax at checkout.Tourist taxes in Europe
- Skip the car for the centerTraffic is heavy in summer and parking near the beach is tight. The seafront is flat and bike-friendly, and buses link the center and the resort strip.

Read the guideRimini FAQ
Is Rimini worth visiting?
Yes for a classic Italian beach holiday with easy trains, and for a short stop in the old town. It is not a quiet escape in July and August, when the seafront is lively and the beaches are full.
When is the best time to visit Rimini?
June and September for the beach with warm water and lighter crowds, and May for walking and cycling. July and August are hot and busy, and many places close from November.
Is Rimini good for families?
Yes. The beach is shallow and sandy, there are many family hotels and activities, and the seafront is flat. Book hotels with beach access early for school holidays.
How do you get from Rimini to Ravenna?
By regional train in about an hour, with frequent departures. A day trip covers the main mosaic sites, so start early and check the return timetable.
Do you need a car in Rimini?
No. The seafront, the old center and the train station are linked by bus and bike lanes. A car helps only if you plan to explore the hill towns of the interior, such as San Marino.
