Ravello is a hilltop town in the province of Salerno, in Campania, southern Italy. It sits on a plateau on a steep cliff, about 350 metres above the sea, and looks over Maiori and Minori toward the Gulf of Salerno. Founded in the 5th century as a refuge from invasions, it grew rich on wool and trade within the Republic of Amalfi, and its merchant families built palazzi, several of which are now hotels.
Most visitors come for the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, whose Terrace of the Infinite overlooks the coast, and for the Ravello Festival, held each summer in Villa Rufolo's gardens and at Oscar Niemeyer's auditorium. Cars reach the town from the Amalfitana road (SS163), and buses serve the town centre. Ravello can also be reached on foot by 782 stairs from Atrani, and the streets inside are steep. Summers are warm and fairly breezy. Plan a day for the main sites, or stay a night to see the town after day visitors leave.
Ravello in five
- Take the bus up from AmalfiLocal buses climb from Amalfi in roughly half an hour. There is no beach in Ravello, so combine it with a coast base. Check the last bus down before you stay late.Amalfi Coast
- Visit the gardens at opening or late in the dayVilla Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone are the main sights and both charge admission. Tour groups fill them around midday, so go early or late, and check each villa's official page for hours.Positano
- Check the concert calendar before you bookThe town hosts summer concerts on a terrace over the sea, and dates change by year. If a performance matters, book the event first and then the room.
- Walk down to MinoriA stepped path leads down the hill to Minori in about an hour, and a bus brings you back up. It is downhill, but the steps are uneven, so wear shoes with grip.Minori
- Stay a night for the evening quietOnce day-trip groups leave, the piazza empties and the terraces turn calm. Many hotels close in winter, so check opening dates before you book.

Read the guideRavello FAQ
Is Ravello worth visiting?
Yes, if you like gardens, views and quiet evenings more than beaches. It is a calm contrast to Positano and Amalfi, and it works as a half-day stop or a night when the buses stop.
How do you get to Ravello?
By local bus from Amalfi, which takes about half an hour, or by taxi from the coast towns. There is no train, so reach the coast by ferry or SS163 bus first, then climb up.
Can you visit Ravello as a day trip from Positano?
Yes, with a change in Amalfi. Allow about two hours each way in summer, check the last bus back and start early. A night in Ravello is more relaxed if you want to see both villas.
Is Ravello better than Positano?
It is quieter and cheaper, with better gardens, but it has no beach. Positano has the postcard view and the sea. Choose Ravello for calm, and stay in Positano or Amalfi if you want to swim.
Are the Ravello gardens worth the ticket?
Villa Cimbrone's terrace and Villa Rufolo's gardens are among the best views on the coast, and both charge admission. If your time is short, visit one rather than rushing both.
