A village on a hill overlooking the ocean

Corniglia

Corniglia is the only Cinque Terre village not on the sea. It sits on a promontory with vineyards and terraces, and visitors climb up from the station to reach it.

Corniglia is a small hamlet of Vernazza in La Spezia province, Liguria, northern Italy. It is the only one of the five Cinque Terre villages not directly on the sea. The village sits on a promontory with vineyards and terraces on three sides. Houses face either Via Fieschi, the main street, or the water, and narrow lanes branch off the street.

The station is at the foot of the hill. From there the Lardarina, a brick staircase of 33 flights and about 377 steps, climbs to the village. A road also climbs from the station, where a small bus sometimes runs. Walkers can come from Vernazza on a path through vineyards and scrub. The lanes are steep and narrow, so travel light. Plan a few hours for the Santa Maria terrace, the San Pietro church and the small harbor. The neighborhoods section below covers where to base yourself. Try the local white, Vernaccia di Corniglia, which grows on the terraced hillsides.

Corniglia in five

  1. Climb the Lardarina or take the shuttleThe brick staircase from the station has roughly 380 steps, and a shuttle bus also runs up. Check the operator or the park for the current timetable and fare before you plan a day.
  2. Check trail status before you walkThe coast trails close for landslides and maintenance, and a card may be required. Read the national park's own site on the day, and do not rely on a hiking blog.Cinque Terre
  3. Sleep here for an empty eveningDay trippers leave by late afternoon and the village is calm at night. It has few restaurants, so reserve dinner or eat early.
  4. Take the train, leave the carThe villages are linked by the coastal rail line and cars cannot enter them. Park in La Spezia or a rail-side lot and ride in.La Spezia
  5. Walk from Manarola on the lower pathThe route between Manarola and Corniglia is a classic walk with sea views. Check its status first, and carry water and proper shoes because the sun is strong in summer.Manarola

Corniglia FAQ

Is Corniglia worth visiting?

Yes, if you want the quietest Cinque Terre village and a view from above. It has no harbor or beach, so pair it with a village by the sea.

How many steps are there to Corniglia?

The Lardarina staircase has roughly 380 steps from the station. A shuttle bus runs on the road as an alternative, so you do not have to climb with a suitcase.

Should I stay in Corniglia?

Only if you want quiet. It has few rooms and restaurants and no beach. Monterosso or La Spezia have more choice, and Manarola is a short train ride away.

Can you walk from Corniglia to Vernazza?

Yes, on a coastal trail, but trail status changes and a card may be required. Check the park's official site on the day, since closures follow landslides or weather.

How long do you need in Corniglia?

Two to three hours cover the village and the viewpoint. Add a night if you want an empty evening, or half a day if you walk the trail to Manarola.
