Bergamo

Bergamo is worth one or two days for its walled old town on a hill, the Venetian walls around it and the funicular that climbs from the lower city.

Bergamo is a city in Lombardy, about 45 km northeast of Milan, and it has two parts. Città Alta is the old walled town on a hill, with narrow streets, the Venetian walls built under Venetian rule in the 16th century, Piazza Vecchia and the cathedral on Piazza Duomo. Città Bassa is the newer lower town on the plain, where the railway station is. A funicular links the two, so you can skip the climb if you prefer.

Most visitors come for one or two days to walk the upper town and its walls, or to use Bergamo as a base for Lake Iseo, Lake Como, Brescia or Milan. Allow a full day for Città Alta and another for a trip out of the city. Staying in the upper town means carrying bags up and down the steps, so choose your hotel with the hill in mind. The airport at Orio al Serio is a short bus ride from the lower city.

How do you get from Bergamo airport to the city?

By city bus in about 15 minutes, or by shuttle to Milan. Check the operator for current fares and times.

Should you stay in Città Alta or Città Bassa?

Città Alta for atmosphere and evenings, Città Bassa for trains, budgets and luggage. Near the airport only for early flights.

How many days do you need in Bergamo?

A day covers the upper town. Two nights add the lower town, a museum and a day trip to Brescia or Lake Iseo.
