Bellagio is a village in Lombardy, northern Italy, on the promontory where Lake Como divides into its two arms. Its old lanes climb steeply from the lakeshore, lined with shops, cafes and small hotels. Many people come for the view across the water. Historic villas along the shore have gardens, and ferries connect the village with other towns on Lake Como.

Bellagio suits couples, slow travelers and anyone who wants a lake base rather than a city break. Spring and early autumn are good months to visit: the gardens are in bloom and the lanes are less crowded than in midsummer. Plan at least one full day to walk the village and take a boat trip. Add a night to see the lake early in the morning and in the evening, after the day-trip crowds leave.

Bellagio in five

  1. Arrive by ferry, not by carFerries link Bellagio with Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia. Parking in the village is limited and the lanes are narrow, so use the boat for the crossing.Lake Como travel guide
  2. Walk the stepped lanes in the morningThe salita lanes climb from the harbor and are steep, with cobbles. Go early, before the day-trippers arrive off the ferries.
  3. Check villa and garden openingsVilla gardens open on seasonal schedules, and some have fixed visiting times or tours. Look at each garden's official page for dates and whether you must book.
  4. Base here for evenings, not for a long stayAfter the ferries thin out, Bellagio is quiet and romantic. If you want more variety, stay in Como or Varenna and visit Bellagio by boat.
