Masjid Raya Baiturrahman is the main mosque of Banda Aceh and the city's best-known landmark, on Jl. Moh. Jam. White walls, black domes and a tall minaret rise above a large garden and a tiled courtyard shaded by retractable parasols. The mosque came through the 2004 tsunami while much of the city around it was destroyed. It is open around the clock and is used every day for prayer. People come to pray, to sit quietly in the courtyard, or to look at the architecture. Women are welcome, and the grounds are wheelchair accessible.
The mosque and the 2004 tsunami

Masjid Raya Baiturrahman is often called simply Mesjid Raya, which means Main Mosque. It is the central landmark of Banda Aceh and the place most people name first when asked what to see in the city.
When the tsunami struck on 26 December 2004, large parts of the city were destroyed. The mosque remained standing, and it has since become a place where residents and visitors reflect on that day as well as pray. Visitors tend to speak about it quietly, and it is best approached in the same way.
The building and the grounds

The walls are whitewashed and the domes are black, a contrast that makes the mosque easy to recognise from a distance. The minaret is tall, and the compound around it is laid out with a large garden and a tiled courtyard.
A more recent addition to the courtyard is a set of retractable shades, which protect worshippers from sun and rain. When open, they look like the sun parasols of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah, a comparison many visitors make. Inside the prayer hall, the columns carry decorative patterns.
Beneath the mosque is a large underground parking area, which keeps the courtyard itself free of vehicles. The compound has a north entrance and a south entrance, restrooms, a hearing loop, and wheelchair-accessible entrances, seating, restrooms and parking.
Prayer times, weddings and visiting etiquette
The mosque is open 24 hours and in constant use. Friday afternoon is the busiest time, when the building and the courtyard fill with worshippers for the congregational prayer. If you come to watch rather than pray, stay at the edges and keep voices low.
Marriage contracts (akad) are also held at the mosque, with couples taking turns on the same day. If you see one in progress, keep your distance and do not photograph the couples without asking.
Dress is simple to follow: cover your skin, and women wear a headscarf. Shoes come off before you enter the compound, and you receive a numbered tag to collect them later. Entry into the prayer hall is for Muslims, so other visitors should stay in the grounds.
