In short

The Galaxy Wave ferry sails La Ceiba to Roatán at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and Roatán to La Ceiba at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Adult regular fares listed by the operator are US$31 one way from La Ceiba and US$30 back. Check in one hour before departure with a passport. Choose a flight when your connection is tight or the sea is a worry.

Roatán ferry or flight from La Ceiba: the quick answer

Most visitors reach Roatán by air, but the ferry from La Ceiba is the main alternative for travelers already on the mainland, and it is the only one with a published, fixed fare table. Start with the Roatán travel guide for the island and the Honduras guide for the country.

The short answer: take the ferry when you are already in La Ceiba, have a daylight connection and want a straightforward, fixed-price crossing. Fly when your timing is tight, when you land late in the day on the mainland, or when sea conditions worry you. The operator, Galaxy Wave, lists two sailings each way a day and a published fare table, and the crossing is short enough that a flight only saves time if the airport connection is tight.

The ferry runs between two terminals with different locations relative to your hotel. The operator says its Roatán terminal is in Dixon Cove near French Harbour and Coxen Hole, that the airport is about a 15-minute taxi ride from the terminal and that West End and West Bay are about 40 to 50 minutes away. The ferry therefore makes sense when you plan the first hotel night around the terminal, or when the next leg is a taxi in daylight.

Ferry or flight, side by side

The table summarizes the choice. Ferry facts come from the operator's own pages; flight cells say what to check, because schedules and fares depend on the airline and the date.

Cost is the first filter. The operator's one-way fare for an adult in regular class is US$31 from La Ceiba and US$30 from Roatán, with first class at US$35 and US$31. Round trips are US$51 in regular class and US$69 in first class. Children aged 5 to 10 pay US$13 and US$12 one way, or US$25 round trip in regular class. For a family of four with two adults and two children in that age group, the published regular round-trip fares add up to US$152, before taxis and meals. Fares can change, so confirm them on the operator's page.

Time is the second filter. A flight is quicker in the air, but the ferry avoids a separate airport transfer on each side if your hotel is near the terminals. Because ferry check-in closes an hour before departure, the real comparison is door to door, and a flight can win only if the airport is close to your hotel on both ends.

The third filter is risk tolerance. The UK government's regional advice records criminal attacks on visitors to the Bay Islands, ferries included, and notes that airlines in Honduras can change their schedules at short notice. Both options carry some risk, and neither should stop a trip. They are reasons to travel in daylight, keep valuables with you and check your insurance covers delays.

Ferry details: tickets, check-in and baggage

The operator's schedule page lists two departures a day from La Ceiba to Roatán, at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and two from Roatán to La Ceiba, at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. It says it recommends booking online and checking in at the terminal one hour before departure, which lets staff process luggage and issue a boarding pass. You can also buy at the ticket window, but arrive early. Its policies page says passengers must register at the terminal at least one hour before departure and risk losing their place if they arrive late.

The details are on the Galaxy Wave schedule and fares page. The same page says no refunds are given for unwanted cancellations, that a reservation can be modified with the reservation team and that the credit from a change is valid for one year from the date the change is confirmed. It also says smoking is not allowed in the terminals, offices or on the vessels. The bag limit is three bags, each up to 50 pounds, with maximum dimensions of 28 by 22 by 14 inches.

The operator's fleet page says the Galaxy Wave is a catamaran in service since 2006 with 240 regular seats in an air-conditioned lower cabin, 150 more seats outside and 60 first-class seats in an upper cabin with a cold drink, a cookie and a panoramic view. Its sister vessel, Tropical Wave, entered service in 2012. The operator says the Galaxy Wave covers the crossing in a record time of 1 hour and 10 minutes. Sea conditions can change the experience, so if you are prone to motion sickness, ask about seats and take your usual remedy.

The La Ceiba terminal is next to the Municipal Docks in eastern La Ceiba, with free parking, a cafe that takes cash only in lempiras or US dollars, an ATM that issues lempiras and a bank branch that exchanges lempiras and dollars. The Roatán terminal in Dixon Cove has similar services. The operator also lists fares to Utila and Guanaja, so the same terminal can be the start of a longer island trip. Check the schedule for those routes separately.

Flying to Roatán

A flight is the better choice in four situations. The first is a late landing: if you arrive on the mainland in the afternoon, the last ferry may be gone. The second is a tight connection to an international flight. The third is poor weather or a rough forecast. The fourth is a plan that starts in the capital or another city, where a direct or one-stop flight to Roatán avoids a land leg through La Ceiba altogether.

What the UK government says is relevant: airlines in Honduras can change their schedules at short notice, so check with your airline or travel agent before you travel. Book with a buffer if you have an onward flight, and keep a flexible fare when the cost difference is small. If your airline flies to Roatán directly from a hub you already use, the ferry is irrelevant.

UK advice also says there is an airport departure tax for international flights ranging from US$40 to US$55, or the same amount in lempiras, depending on the airport, normally included in the cost of the ticket, with a lower rate for domestic flights, again normally included. Confirm at booking that the tax is part of the fare.

Getting to La Ceiba safely

The ferry only helps if you reach La Ceiba in good time. The operator says its schedule is coordinated with bus schedules in La Ceiba, that the bus station is several minutes away by taxi and that from the station you can travel to major cities such as San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. Rental cars are available at the terminal.

The road is the part to plan carefully. UK advice says there is a risk of criminal attacks and carjackings in and around Tela, La Ceiba, Trujillo and El Progreso, and that there have been violent attacks on people in cars and buses. It suggests using a reputable tour company for longer journeys, considering alternatives to public buses, traveling on main roads between major cities and tourist destinations, and avoiding travel after dark. Luxury buses operated by private companies are described as usually better maintained than public buses.

Build the schedule from those facts. A morning ferry at 9:30 a.m. works best when you sleep in La Ceiba the night before, rather than racing a bus from San Pedro Sula at dawn. An afternoon ferry at 4:30 p.m. leaves time for a daylight bus or a transfer, but arrives on the island in the late afternoon, so confirm your hotel pickup. If you rent a car for the mainland leg, read renting a car abroad and note that rental companies often set a higher minimum age and may require an international driving permit.

The return trip

The return ferries leave Roatán at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Work backward. A 7:00 a.m. sailing requires registration by 6:00 a.m. at Dixon Cove, which means leaving West End or West Bay around 5:00 a.m. given the 40 to 50 minute ride the operator quotes, or sleeping near the terminal the night before. A 2:00 p.m. sailing arrives in La Ceiba in the middle of the afternoon, which leaves daylight for a bus or taxi but not much of it.

If you are connecting to an international flight from another city, do not schedule it for the same day as the ferry. A delayed sailing, a long bus ride and a missed connection is a poor chain, and travel after dark is discouraged by UK advice. Sleep in La Ceiba or fly directly from the island, whichever suits your route. The departure tax is normally included in the airline ticket, so you should not pay at the airport.

Mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is arriving at the terminal 30 minutes before departure. The operator says registration closes at least one hour before, and passengers who arrive late risk losing their place. The second is booking the first ferry without a plan for the road to La Ceiba. The third is forgetting your passport: the operator requires a valid passport for foreigners on the day of travel.

The fourth is overpacking beyond the three-bag limit. The fifth is booking non-refundable hotel nights on the island without leaving a margin for a missed sailing, since the operator's policy gives no refunds for unwanted cancellations. The sixth is skipping paperwork for Honduras: the visa rule depends on your passport and the customs declaration is online. Check the visa checker, then read visas and entry and keep travel insurance in place for delays and medical care.

Once you reach the island, where to stay in Roatán compares West End, West Bay and the mid-island towns, and Roatán in 3 days gives a route. An eSIM for Honduras helps with tickets and maps, and the getting around page compares travel options across the region.
