Honduras is a Central American republic with coasts on the Caribbean and the Pacific, and its capital is Tegucigalpa. It borders Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the southwest and Nicaragua to the southeast. Most of the country is mountainous, while the coastal lowlands are hot and very humid. Visitors head mainly to the Bay Islands, Roatán, Utila and Guanaja, which lie off the north coast in the Caribbean. Waters around the islands and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef hold whale sharks, manta rays and parrotfish.
Copán was the dominant Maya state in western Honduras, and its ruins are the best-known pre-Columbian site in the country. La Mosquitia, in the northeast, holds the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, a lowland rainforest and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. The rainy season runs from May to November across most of the country. Travelers should be wary on roads, since armed robbers have set up fake checkpoints using police-style uniforms. The Bay Islands have lower crime rates than the mainland.
Five things to know before Honduras
- Read the UK travel advice before you plan overland
UK advice calls the Bay Islands generally safer than the mainland, notes protests and roadblocks in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba, and lists roads with attacks. Use registered transport and read it again before you fly. UK travel advice
- Check the visa rule for your passport
British citizens must have a visa, unlike in Guatemala or Nicaragua. Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish advice lists visa-free stays of up to 90 days. Check your own passport before you book. Visa checker
- Complete the customs form and keep the stamp
Honduras asks for an online customs declaration before you enter and again before you leave; keep the QR code on your phone. Make sure the officer stamps your passport and note the days: missing stamps can bring fines.
- Fly or ferry straight to the Bay Islands
Ferries run from La Ceiba to Roatán, and airlines can change schedules at short notice. Compare the crossing with a flight before you commit to the north coast. Ferry or flight to Roatán
- Budget for the departure tax and the land border fee
UK advice gives an international departure tax of 40 to 55 US dollars depending on the airport, normally in the ticket price. Land borders may charge 3 US dollars in cash; keep the receipt until you leave. Roatán

Honduras FAQ
Do I need a visa for Honduras?
British citizens do: apply through the Honduran Embassy in London or the nearest embassy before you travel. Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish advice lists visa-free stays of up to 90 days. The visa checker shows each passport.
Roatán or Utila?
Roatán is bigger, with more resorts, restaurants and a ferry link to La Ceiba. Utila is smaller and cheaper, known for dive courses and a backpacker scene.
Is Honduras safe for tourists?
UK advice puts Honduras among the highest violent-crime countries in Latin America, adds that most serious crime does not touch tourists, and asks you to avoid walking around Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. The Bay Islands are rated generally safer.
When is the best time to visit the Bay Islands?
The mainland interior is driest from about November to April, while the islands and the Caribbean coast follow a different pattern, with more rain from about October to January. The hurricane season normally runs from May to November.
How do I get to Copán Ruinas?
Copán Ruinas lies near the Guatemalan border, in the west. Reach it by road from San Pedro Sula or across the border from Guatemala, in daylight, and read the UK advice on road and border risks first.
