Jacmel is a port town on the Caribbean coast of southeastern Haiti, known for its painters, sculptors and papier-mâché makers. Studios and shops line the older streets near the center. The town's Carnival is known for large papier-mâché masks and floats, and its parades run in the weeks before Lent.

Go for the art and a slower coastal pace, and plan transport and lodging ahead, since services are limited outside the center. The Bassin Bleu, a set of natural pools in the hills nearby, is a common day trip, reached by road and a walk. The drier months from December to April are the most practical time to visit, and Carnival draws large crowds, so book early for those dates. Plan at least two or three days, and check current government travel advisories for Haiti before you book.

    Jacmel FAQ

    Is Jacmel safe to visit?

Security in Haiti changes quickly. Read your government's current advisory, travel by day with a known driver, and ask your lodging for current local advice before you go.

    Is Jacmel worth visiting?

Yes for a coastal town with an old center, Carnival and the Bassin Bleu pools nearby. The trip takes more arranging than a city stay, so plan on cash and a driver.

How do you get to Jacmel from Port-au-Prince?

By hired car or taxi with a driver on the mountain road. The drive takes several hours, so leave early in daylight and agree the price and pickup time before you set out.

Do you need a visa for Haiti?

It depends on your passport. Check entry rules with Haiti's embassy or consulate in your country before you book flights or hotels.

How many days do you need in Jacmel?

Two nights gives time for the old town and the Bassin Bleu walk without rushing the drive. A single day trip from Port-au-Prince is long and tiring.

    When is Carnival in Jacmel?

Carnival is held in the weeks before Lent, so the dates change each year. Check the festival calendar and book a bed early if you plan to go.
