Haiti

Haiti rewards travelers who want a close look at history, with the Citadelle Laferrière above Cap-Haïtien, northern coast towns and mountain roads as the main draw.

Haiti occupies the western third of Hispaniola, the island it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haitian Creole and French are the official languages. The country declared independence in 1804, becoming the first independent Black republic. Mountains rise behind much of the coast. In the north, the Citadelle Laferrière was begun in 1805 and sits on a mountain above Cap-Haïtien, with the Sans-Souci Palace at Milot nearby.

Plan several days in one region rather than a short stop, since mountain roads are slow and conditions can change. Cap-Haïtien is a practical base for the Citadelle, which lies a drive away. Check current government travel advice before you book. The drier months, roughly December to April, are the easiest time to travel. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Five things to know before Haiti

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

Governments including the UK and US advise against all travel to all or large parts of Haiti. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

  2. Check with your insurer before anything else

Ask your insurer in writing whether you are covered for medical care and evacuation in Haiti. Many policies exclude travel against government advice. Travel insurance

  3. Know that consular help is very limited

The UK has no consular staff in Haiti and helps British nationals from its embassy in the Dominican Republic. Other countries may have similar limits.

  4. Plan for emergency services that may not come

Do not count on a quick police or ambulance response. Save your embassy's contact details and your insurer's assistance line offline before you go.

  5. Check entry rules and flights for your passport

Visa rules and flight schedules can change at short notice. Confirm entry with Haiti's embassy and flights directly with your airline before you plan. Visas and entry
