Guinea is a coastal country on the Atlantic in West Africa, bordered by Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Conakry, the capital and largest city, is the hub for the country's economy, commerce, education and culture. At about 245,857 square kilometers, Guinea is roughly the size of the United Kingdom, and some roads are hard going: the road from Labé toward Koundara is impassable in the rainy season. Four natural regions run from the Atlantic coast to the highlands, the northeast savanna and the southeast forest.
The Fouta Djallon is the highland region of central Guinea, with waterfalls near Pita, Dalaba and Kindia, such as the Kinkon cascades near Pita, about 80 m high. The Niger, Gambia and Senegal rivers rise in these highlands, which is why Guinea is called the water tower of West Africa. The rainy season runs roughly from May to October, so the drier months from November to April are the easier months for road travel. Guinea receives very few foreign tourists.
Five things to know before Guinea
- Apply for the e-Visa before you fly
Apply online with the border police several days ahead. You receive an entry letter, and the visa itself is issued at the arrival counter at Conakry airport. Guinea e-Visa
- Carry your yellow fever certificate
A yellow fever certificate is needed for the e-Visa application and at the border if you arrive from a country with transmission risk.
- Know there is no emergency number
Guinea has no public emergency services line. Save the numbers of a private clinic in Conakry and make sure your insurance includes evacuation.
- Keep currency export limits in mind
You cannot take more than 100,000 Guinean francs or $5,000 in foreign cash out of Guinea. Spend or change francs before you leave.
- Visit the Fouta Djallon in the dry season
November to April is dry; from June to September Conakry gets some of the heaviest rain in West Africa and highland roads turn to mud.
