Skiathos is a Greek island in the Northern Sporades, in the Aegean Sea off the mainland's east coast. Its best-known beach is Koukounaries on the west coast, a long sandy stretch with pine trees behind it. Lalaria, on the north coast, is a cove reached by boat or on foot, so boat trips are the usual way to spend a day out. Most visitors come for the sand and the sea.
Skiathos Town, on the harbor, is the island's main base. Its cafes, tavernas and day-trip boats are within walking distance, which makes it the easiest place to stay on a first visit. Beaches farther from town are quieter and more spread out, so choosing between a room in town and one near the sand is the main planning decision. Late spring to early autumn is the best time for swimming and boat trips. The island has its own airport and is also served by ferries from the mainland ports of Agios Konstantinos and Volos.
