Alonnisos is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea and the third largest of the Northern Sporades, after Skiathos and Skopelos. It lies about 3 km east of Skopelos, across a strait of roughly 2 nautical miles, and covers about 64.5 square km. Most of the island is limestone. The north is hilly, while the flatter south holds the villages. The main port, Patitiri, is in the southeast, with ferries, catamarans and hydrofoils sailing to Volos, Thessaloniki, Skiathos and Skopelos.
Visitors go for the quiet and the sea. The Alonnisos Marine Park, created in 1992, protects the Mediterranean monk seal and other wildlife, and the Sporades National Marine Park is based at the north end of the island. Boat trips reach the Blue Cave on the northeast coast, which can only be reached by sea. Chora, the old village in the south, was rebuilt after the 1965 earthquake, and its restored stone houses are now used for tourist accommodation. The island suits a slow holiday of beaches, boat days and walks.
Alonnisos in five
- Fly to Skiathos, then take the boatSkiathos has the nearest airport, and boats link it to Skopelos and Alonnisos. Check the season's timetable, since hydrofoils and ferries run more often in summer.Skiathos
- Choose Patitiri for ferries and Old Alonnisos for viewsPatitiri is the port, with shops and boats. The old village (Hora) above it has views over the sea and a quieter feel, but is up a steep road.
- Book a boat trip into the marine parkThe Alonnisos Northern Sporades marine park protects Mediterranean monk seals, so boat tours keep their distance. Choose an operator that follows park rules and avoid peak midday heat.
- Hike the old paths in spring or autumnWaymarked trails cross the pine hills and link villages. Carry water and a map, and avoid midday in July and August.
- Combine with Skopelos and SkiathosDay boats and ferries link the three islands, so a week can split between them. Check the summer timetable before you book rooms.Skopelos
