Preveza is a port city in Epirus, northwestern Greece, at the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf. It is the capital of the Preveza regional unit, and the city had 19,309 residents at the 2021 census. Across a strait only about 600 meters wide lies the flat, sandy Cape of Actium. The sea off the cape is where Octavian's fleet defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra on 2 September 31 BC.
Ancient Nicopolis, about 7 km north of town, was built by Augustus after his victory at Actium. Its walls, basilicas, theater, baths, stadium and Augustus Monument are still visible. In town, Ottoman-era forts and a Venetian clock tower from 1792 are still standing, and the Aktio-Preveza tunnel shortens the trip to Lefkada. Summer is the busiest season, when the taverns, cafes and marina are most active. Give the ruins and old town a full day, and add a night or two for trips to Lefkada.
Preveza in five
- Use Preveza as the arrival hub for Epirus and LefkadaThe airport is close, and Parga, Lefkada and Ioannina are each within about one to two hours by road. Pick up your car at the airport.Parga
- Cross to Aktio by tunnel or ferryA short tunnel and a small ferry link Preveza with Aktio across the strait. The tunnel is the easy road into the south.
- Visit Nikopolis early in the dayThe Roman city founded after the battle of Actium lies just north, with theater, walls and a museum. Check opening times with the ministry of culture before you go.
- Eat fish by the harbor, not on the main roadThe harbor streets in town have the best seafood tavernas. Eat at Greek hours, and book weekends in summer.
- Rent a car for Lefkada and the coastPublic transport is thin beyond the main towns. A car gives you the beaches to the north and south and the roads to Ioannina.Compare car hire
