Parga sits on the Ionian coast in the northwest of the Preveza regional unit, in Epirus, northwestern Greece. It lies between Preveza, about 68 km away, and Igoumenitsa, about 40 km away. The town is built in an amphitheater shape on a hillside above the sea, and its nickname is the Bride of Epirus. It is the busiest tourist spot in the area and the most popular destination in Epirus.

Most trips here center on the beaches, the castle and the boats. Krioneri, the main beach, is a short walk from the center. Valtos, near the castle, has clear water, and Lichnos, about 3 km east, has sand, pebbles and two small sea caves. The castle above town was first built around the 11th century to guard against pirates and Ottoman raids, and Ali Pasha later added a bathhouse and harem quarters. In summer, ferries link Parga daily with Paxos and Antipaxos, which lie opposite the town. Summer suits swimming and boats; winters are mild and rainy.

Parga FAQ

Is Parga worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a small walkable harbor town with beaches and day boats rather than a big resort. It is quiet outside July and August and works well as a base for Epirus.

How do you get to Parga from the airport?

Preveza airport is the closest, about an hour away by taxi or rental car. Buses are limited, so book a transfer or car in advance for late arrivals.

What is the best beach in Parga?

Valtos is the longest and easiest, with facilities. Lichnos is quieter and sheltered. Sarakiniko needs a boat or a rough walk. Check wind and swell before you go.

Can you visit Paxos from Parga?

Yes, by day boat in season, usually with a swim at Antipaxos. Check the departure time, the price and whether lunch is included before you book.

How many days do you need in Parga?

Three days covers the town, the castle, two beaches and a boat trip. Five days adds the Acheron springs and a drive inland to Epirus.
