Evia is the second-largest island in Greece, after Crete. It lies off the east coast of the mainland, northeast of Athens. A bridge at Chalkida joins it to Boeotia, so you can drive there from the capital, and ferries also cross from mainland ports such as Arkitsa and Oropos. The island is long and narrow, with mountains and pine forests in the middle, small coastal villages, and beaches that range from sand to pebbles. Chalkida, the main town, is the usual base for a first visit.
People come for the mix of landscapes and the thermal springs at Edipsos on the north-west coast. The north and south are far apart, so pick one area for a short trip. Summer is the busiest season for swimming. Late spring and early autumn suit walking and quieter coves. Plan at least a long weekend for one area, or a week to see both the north and the south.
Evia in five
- Drive across the bridge at ChalkidaThe island is reached by road from Athens in about an hour to Chalkida, so a rental car or your own wheels make exploring easy. Bridges mean no ferry needed.Central Greece
- Choose north or south, not bothNorth Evia has pine forests, Edipsos's thermal baths and Prokopi, and the south has beaches and Karystos. The island is 150 km long, so split a trip by region.
- Visit Edipsos for thermal bathsEdipsos is a historic spa town on the north coast with hot springs and seafront hotels. Check which baths are open for your dates before you plan.
- Check recent wildfire recovery in the northLarge fires hit north Evia in 2021, and forests are still recovering. Check local advice and road conditions in summer, and avoid fire-risk activities.
- Use ferries as an alternativeShort crossings link Arkitsa with Edipsos and Rafina with Marmari or Karystos. Check the schedule if you want to skip the bridge.Getting around Greece
