Corfu Town, known in Greek as Kerkyra, is the capital of Corfu, an island in the Ionian Sea off Greece's western coast. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Venetian rule shaped its streets, and French and British periods added later layers. The lanes are narrow and twist between stone houses, churches with bell towers and small squares, so walking is the easiest way to get around.
The main sights are the Liston, a row of arcades along the Spianada, the large open green space at the edge of the old town, and two fortresses: the Old Fortress on a rocky point by the sea, and the New Fortress. Climbing up to the Old Fortress rewards you with views over the water and the old roofs. One full day covers the old town and both fortresses; stay two nights if you want evenings on the Liston. Spring and autumn bring milder weather than summer, which is hot and busy.
Corfu Town in five
- Start at the Old Fortress and finish on the SpianadaThe fortress stands on a promontory with views over the old town and Albania's coast. Go early, then walk down to the Spianada's lawns and the Liston arcade for a coffee.Corfu travel guide
- Wander the kantounia, not the main streetsThe lanes behind the Liston run steeply, with laundry lines and shrines. The tall Venetian houses make the old town feel more Italian than Aegean.Where to stay in Corfu

How many days do you need in Corfu Town?
One full day covers the Old Fortress, the Spianada and the old lanes. Two days lets you add Mon Repos, the Achilleion or Kanoni without hurrying. Stay longer only for the island's beaches.
Is Corfu Town walkable?
Yes. The old town is compact, though the lanes are steep and paved with slippery stone. Wear shoes with grip, and use a taxi to reach the Achilleion and the beaches.
Is Corfu Town worth a night?
Yes if you like old towns, because the lanes are calmer in the evening and early morning after the cruise crowds leave. Skip it if you only want beaches, and use the coasts instead.
What is Corfu Town known for?
A UNESCO-listed old town with Venetian, French and British layers, two fortresses and the Liston arcade. It also has a cricket pitch on the Spianada, a leftover of British rule.
How far is Corfu airport from the old town?
About 3 km south, so a taxi takes roughly 10–15 minutes outside rush hour. Local buses also run from the city center, but check the timetable if you have an early flight.
