Cologne Cathedral

Visit Cologne Cathedral beside the main station to see Gothic architecture, stained glass and the Shrine of the Three Kings, or climb its south tower.

Cologne Cathedral, or Kölner Dom, stands beside the city’s main train station at Domkloster 4. Its twin Gothic spires rise 157 metres above the city, while the carved façade and stained-glass windows reward a closer look. Inside, find the Shrine of the Three Kings, kept here since 1164, and the main altar. You can also climb the south tower for views across Cologne, but the route has 533 steps and no lift. Entry to the church is free; allow at least an hour for a visit.

A Gothic project begun in 1248

Cologne Cathedral

Work on Cologne Cathedral began in 1248, after the relics of the Three Kings arrived in the city in 1164. A new Gothic building was planned to house them. Its design drew inspiration from large French cathedrals, and the scale of the project is clear in the carved façade and soaring interior.

Construction stopped before the cathedral was complete. Work resumed in the 19th century, following the medieval plans, and the twin spires were finished in 1880. At 157 metres, they remain a defining feature of Cologne’s skyline. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands beside the city’s main train station, making it one of the first landmarks many people see on arrival.

Inside the cathedral

The stained-glass windows bring colour into the broad, calm interior. Look for the main altar and the Shrine of the Three Kings, a medieval reliquary associated with the remains of the biblical Magi. It has been kept at the cathedral since 1164 and has drawn pilgrims to Cologne.

Take time to look at the cathedral’s details from both inside and out. The exterior is covered with carved figures, while the height and scale of the nave are easier to appreciate once you are inside. The cathedral remains a place of worship as well as a major landmark, so keep your visit respectful and follow any guidance given on site.

Climbing the south tower

The south tower climb leads to a viewpoint over Cologne, but it is a strenuous part of the visit: there are 533 steps, no lift, and visitors may need to pass one another on the stairs. Queues can form, so allow extra time if you want to go up. Consider your comfort with a long stair climb before joining the line.

The church is free to enter, while the tower and other parts of the cathedral may require separate tickets. Guided tours are available for visitors who want more detail on the building’s history and architecture. Some tours focus on specific features, including the stained glass, cathedral treasury or crypt; check the available options before choosing.
