Schloss Drachenburg

Schloss Drachenburg near Bonn: a neo-Gothic castle above the Rhine, reached by rack railway or steep walk. Interiors, views and visiting tips.

Schloss Drachenburg is a neo-Gothic castle halfway up the Drachenfels hill in Königswinter, on the Rhine south of Bonn. Baron Stephan von Sarter had it built between 1882 and 1884 as a villa in the style of a palace. Inside, you walk through furnished rooms, wall paintings and stained glass, and a short exhibition covers the castle's history. A narrow staircase leads to a high viewpoint over the Rhine Valley. The park around the castle has terraces, benches and a fountain. You reach it on foot or by the Drachenfelsbahn rack railway.

Schloss Drachenburg

Schloss Drachenburg was built in only two years, between 1882 and 1884, for Baron Stephan von Sarter (1833 to 1902). He made his fortune as a stock exchange broker and banker. He planned to live in the building himself but never did, so it is a villa dressed as a palace and not a working castle.

The design draws on the medieval castles of the Rhine. Neo-Gothic forms dominate, with Romanesque and Renaissance elements mixed in. The castle changed hands many times after von Sarter, and each private owner left a mark on it. Parts of the interior have since been restored from scraps of historical evidence. The building is protected as a listed monument.

Inside the castle

The rooms are smaller than the towers suggest from outside, but they are furnished and fully decorated in the style of the late 19th century. Look for the stained glass windows, which include painted portraits of known people and artists. Paintings cover many of the walls and ceilings. Some of the furniture is reproduced to match original pieces.

A permanent exhibition on the history of the castle is short and gives useful context for the turns in its story. Texts are placed throughout the building. Carpets run over the original floors to protect them, which is also the reason strollers are not allowed in.

The upper part of the castle is reached by a narrow spiral staircase. At the top you look out over the Rhine and the Siebengebirge, and on a clear day Cologne Cathedral is visible in the distance.

The park and the terraces

The grounds were laid out from 1881 as a landscape garden with terraces, a pleasure ground, a sloping meadow and a wooded park. The designer is not known. The park lies within the Siebengebirge nature park, and trails and viewpoints run through it.

Behind the castle restaurant there is a garden with a fountain and plenty of benches. The terraces face the Rhine Valley, and there are more restaurants and a souvenir shop along the path up from the valley.

Getting up the hill

The castle sits about halfway up the Drachenfels. From Königswinter the Drachenfelsbahn rack railway climbs the hill and runs about every 30 minutes to the Schlosstor station, which is the stop for the castle. You can also walk up on a steep path, which takes real effort but runs through woods.

A common plan is to take the train to the top, visit the Drachenfels ruin with its 12th century keep, a well-known symbol of Rhine romanticism, and then walk down to the castle. Another is to buy a one-way train ticket and walk back down. From the park you can also continue through the forest to Bad Honnef.

The train is a separate cost from the castle entrance unless you buy a combined ticket, so check the options at the station. Drivers can use the parking area at the foot of the hill.
