Colonne Vendôme

See the 44-metre bronze Colonne Vendôme at the centre of Place Vendôme, with its spiral reliefs, classical façades and luxury boutiques.

Colonne Vendôme stands at the centre of Place Vendôme in Paris’s 1st arrondissement, north of the Tuileries Gardens. The 44-metre bronze monument was commissioned by Napoleon to mark his victory at Austerlitz. Look closely at the spiral of reliefs around its shaft, then take in the square’s classical façades and symmetrical layout. Luxury boutiques line the square, and the Ritz is nearby. Come early or later in the evening for a quieter look at the monument and its setting.

A monument commissioned by Napoleon

Colonne Vendôme was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. The 44-metre column is bronze-covered and takes inspiration from Trajan’s Column in Rome.

A statue of Napoleon dressed as a Roman emperor stands at the top. Around the shaft, a spiral of bronze reliefs recounts the campaign. The monument’s height and intricate surface make it worth viewing from close up as well as from across the square.

The column in Place Vendôme

Place Vendôme is in Paris’s 1st arrondissement, north of the Tuileries Gardens and east of the Church of La Madeleine. Its classical façades create a balanced, symmetrical setting around the column, with luxury boutiques along the square.

The Ritz is also on Place Vendôme, and the Royal Theatre is nearby. Visit early in the morning or later in the evening for a quieter atmosphere. At Christmas, decorations give the square a seasonal look.
