The chapel is part of the Daughters of Charity mother house on Rue du Bac. It was consecrated on August 6, 1815, and dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The building that stood on the site before it was the medieval Hôtel de Châtillon.

Catherine Labouré, born Zoé Labouré, entered the Daughters of Charity mother house on April 21, 1830, aged 24. Later that year, she reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the chapel. The account is connected to the creation of the Miraculous Medal: Catherine was asked to have a medal made.
