Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel

See the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel near the Louvre in Paris, with detailed Napoleonic sculptures and views of the museum and pyramid.

Near the Louvre in Paris, the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel is an early 19th-century monument built on Napoleon Bonaparte’s orders. Its Corinthian design, detailed battle sculptures and statues on top reward a closer look. The arch stands between the Louvre and the Tuileries Gardens, with views that can bring the monument, museum and pyramid into one photo. Smaller and less well known than the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs-Élysées, it makes a convenient stop while exploring the Louvre area.

Built for Napoleon

The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel was erected at the beginning of the 19th century on Napoleon Bonaparte’s orders. Its Corinthian style takes inspiration from the Arch of Septimius Severus in Rome.

The monument originally formed the entrance to the Tuileries Palace. The palace burned during the Paris Commune in 1871 and was never rebuilt.

Sculptures and views

Battle and victory scenes cover the arch, with statues known as a quadriga above. Take time to look at the sculptural details rather than treating the monument only as a photo stop.

From the arch, the Louvre and its pyramid provide a distinctive backdrop. Its position between the museum and the Tuileries Gardens also makes it easy to include in a walk through this part of Paris.
