Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne

The Volcans d'Auvergne park is a set of extinct volcanoes in central France, known for grassy domes, crater walks and high ridges.

The Volcans d'Auvergne park lies in the Massif Central, in the Auvergne region of central France. Its volcanoes are no longer active, so the land now has grassy domes, crater rims and forested slopes, with small stone villages in the valleys. The best-known summit is the Puy de Dôme, a rounded volcano a short drive from Clermont-Ferrand, which you can climb on foot or reach by rack railway. The Puy de Sancy, the highest peak in the Massif Central, rises further south in the Monts Dore.

The park suits walking, slow driving and stops for local food. Hiking is best from late spring to early autumn, when the trails are usually clear of snow. In winter the Sancy area has ski runs. Saint-Nectaire, a cheese from the Auvergne, is one local product to look for in village shops. Allow several days, because the main areas are spread out and you will drive between them.

  3. Pack for a cooler summitThe high ridges are cooler and windier than Clermont-Ferrand, and cloud can close in quickly. Carry a jacket, water and a map even for a short walk.
  4. Base in Clermont-Ferrand or a mountain villageThe city has the train, the airport and restaurants, while Le Mont-Dore and Besse suit walkers who want to start at the trailhead.Clermont-Ferrand travel guide
  5. Taste the local cheeses on the wayThe Cantal and Salers areas make the region's cheeses, sold at farms and village shops. Ask about opening hours, as small producers often close at midday.

Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne FAQ

Are the Auvergne volcanoes active?

No. The ones in the Chaîne des Puys are extinct, and the last eruptions were thousands of years ago. They are walking country, with grassy craters you can climb.

How do you get to the Puy de Dôme?

By the rack train from the base station, or on foot in about an hour on a path from the pass at the foot. Drive to the base, and check the operator's site for the day's schedule.

Do you need a car for the Volcans d'Auvergne park?

Yes, for most of it. Buses and trains reach Clermont-Ferrand and a few villages, but the high ridges and lakes are far from stations.

How many days do you need in the Auvergne volcanoes?

Two days for the Puy de Dôme and one other ridge. Three if you also want the Cantal and the Sancy massif. A day trip from Clermont-Ferrand works for the Puy de Dôme alone.

When is the best time to visit the Auvergne volcanoes?

May to June and September to October for mild weather and green or golden slopes. July and August are warm but busy, and winter brings snow and some closed roads.
