Mont St-Michel

Go to Mont St-Michel for the abbey on its rocky island, the walk along the ramparts, and a bay where the tide sets the pace of the visit.

Mont St-Michel is a tidal island off the Normandy coast in northern France, linked to the mainland by a causeway. A Benedictine abbey sits on the granite summit, and a village of narrow lanes climbs up to its gate. Twice a day the tide floods the bay around the island and then drains it, so the timing of your visit matters as much as the sights themselves.

Most visitors come for the abbey, the walk along the ramparts and the view over the bay. The island and its bay have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. A half day covers the main sights for many visitors, while an overnight stay lets you walk the island after the day crowds have gone. Spring and early autumn bring milder weather than winter and smaller crowds than midsummer.

Mont St-Michel in five

  1. Plan the route: no train reaches the islandTrains stop at Pontorson, about 9 km away, and a bus or a car covers the last stretch. A direct Paris Montparnasse train plus coach runs daily April to October and on weekends all year; check SNCF Connect.Tides, shuttle and parking
  2. Buy the abbey ticket onlineAdult entry is 16 euros from April to September 2026 and 13 euros from October to March. EU residents aged 18 to 25 enter free, as does everyone on the first Sunday of Nov–Mar months.Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel
  3. Park on the mainland, ride the free shuttleThe Passeur shuttle is free, but parking is charged: in 2026 a car pays 14, 22 or 28 euros per 24 hours depending on the season, and the first 30 minutes are free.Official hours and rates
  4. Check the tide table before you choose a dayThe Mont is surrounded by water only at the biggest tides; the official site lists just two for 2026. Arrive one to two hours before a big high tide, and cross the bay only with an accredited guide.Tide schedules
  5. Stay a night to see it quietMost visitors leave by early evening. A night on the island, on the mainland or in Pontorson gives you calmer lanes in the evening and morning, and it avoids a long same-day trip from Paris.Day trip or overnight

Mont St-Michel FAQ

Is Mont St-Michel worth visiting?

Yes. It is one of the most recognizable sights in France. The abbey and the views over the bay reward the trip, though the main street is crowded in summer. Go early or stay a night.

Can you visit Mont St-Michel as a day trip from Paris?

Yes, by a direct train and coach that runs daily April to October and on weekends all year, by a day tour or by car. The train alone takes about 3 hours 53 minutes each way, so a night nearby is more relaxed.

How long do you need at Mont St-Michel?

Three to four hours covers the abbey, the ramparts and the main street. A full day adds the bay and a meal. An overnight lets you see the island before and after the day-trippers.

Do you need to book tickets for Mont St-Michel?

The abbey sells timed tickets online, and booking ahead helps on busy days. The village and ramparts are free to walk. Prices change with the season, so check the abbey's site for hours and the price for your date.

When is the best time to visit Mont St-Michel?

Spring and early autumn for fewer crowds and mild weather. July and August are the most crowded months. For the water to surround the Mont you need one of the few biggest tides each year, so check the official calendar.
