La Rochelle is a seaport on the Bay of Biscay, on France's Atlantic coast, and the capital of the Charente-Maritime department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is known as a porte océane, a gateway to the ocean, with three ports for fishing, trade and yachting. Start at the Vieux Port, the Old Harbor, lined with seafood restaurants and guarded at its entrance by three medieval towers: the Chain Tower, the Lantern Tower (15th century) and the Saint Nicolas Tower.
The city was an important Huguenot center from 1568. During the Siege of La Rochelle in 1627 and 1628, Cardinal Richelieu blockaded it for 14 months before it surrendered. The old town is well preserved, and the city walls are open for an evening promenade. The climate is oceanic: winters are mild and wet, and summers are warm, dry and sunny. For a boat trip, go from the harbor to Île d'Aix or Fort Boyard, or drive north over the bridge to Île de Ré.
La Rochelle in five
- Start at the Vieux-PortThe harbor is the center of the city, with the medieval towers at its mouth and cafes along the quay. A morning walk gives you the main sights, and the old streets lie just behind.
- Take the TGV from ParisDirect TGV services reach La Rochelle in about 3 hours from Paris Montparnasse. Book early for summer weekends and school holidays.Plan your rail trip
- Add Île de Ré by bus or bikeThe island is reached by bridge, and a bus service runs from the city. A day is enough for a bike ride and a harbor lunch, though a night allows a calmer pace.Île de Ré travel guide
- Take a boat trip for the fort and the towersHarbor boats run to nearby islands and forts in season. Check the operator's timetable and weather, since sailings change with tides and wind.
- Go south by train for Bordeaux and the Basque coastThe Atlantic coast runs south from La Rochelle, and Bordeaux is the next big rail stop. The Basque coast is a longer ride that makes sense as a separate leg.French Basque Country guide

Read the guideLa Rochelle FAQ
Is La Rochelle worth visiting?
Yes for a harbor city with history and seafood. The old port and towers are the draw, and the island is close. It is not a big-sight city, so a long weekend is enough.
How many days do you need in La Rochelle?
Two days cover the old port, the towers and a boat trip. Add one or two for Île de Ré. Skip longer stays unless you plan to cycle or swim.
How do you get to La Rochelle from Paris?
By TGV from Paris Montparnasse in about 3 hours. Check the SNCF timetable for the exact time, and book early for summer weekends.
Can you visit Île de Ré from La Rochelle?
Yes, by bus or car over the bridge in about 30 minutes. Day trips work, but summer traffic is heavy, so a bike or an early start helps.
When is the best time to visit La Rochelle?
May to June and September for mild weather and fewer crowds. July is busy with festivals, and August is crowded. Winter is quiet and can be windy.
