Giverny

Giverny is a village in Normandy, France, where Claude Monet lived and painted. His flower garden and water-lily pond are the main reason to go, and it makes an easy day trip from Paris.

Giverny is a village in the Eure department of Normandy, on the Seine near Vernon. Claude Monet lived there from 1883 until his death in 1926, and he designed the flower garden himself. The water-lily pond in that garden became the subject of many of his late paintings. His pink house, with a yellow dining room and a blue kitchen, is open to visitors alongside the gardens.

From Paris, take a train from Saint-Lazare to Vernon, then a bus, taxi or shuttle to Giverny. The garden is at its fullest from late spring into summer, when the water lilies and roses are in bloom. Give the visit half a day, and leave time to walk the village, which drew many American painters in the late 1880s and 1890s. Check the return train times in Vernon before you set out.

Giverny FAQ

Is Giverny worth visiting?

Yes if you love gardens or Impressionism. The visit is short and pretty, but the site is small and crowded in summer. Go early in the morning in season.

When is Monet's garden open?

From 1 April to 1 November in 2026, daily from 10am to 6pm, with last admission at 5:30pm. It is closed in winter, so check the Fondation's site for next season's dates.

How do you get from Paris to Giverny?

By train from Paris Saint-Lazare to Vernon-Giverny in about 50 minutes, then a seasonal shuttle (€5 single, €10 return) or a bike. Check SNCF for your train and the shuttle timetable.

Do you need tickets for Monet's garden in advance?

The Fondation highly recommends booking online, because once the online quota fills you should expect long waits on site. Tickets are also sold at the gate, so a quiet April weekday carries less risk.

What is the best month to visit Giverny?

May and June for roses and spring bloom, or September for late flowers and fewer crowds. July and August are busy. The garden is closed from November to March.
