Angers is a city in western France, the prefecture of the Maine-et-Loire department and the historic capital of the old province of Anjou until the Revolution. The Mayenne, Sarthe and Loir rivers meet here to form the Maine, which flows south to the Loire. Paris is about 265 km away by straight-line distance, and direct TGV trains from Angers Saint-Laud reach Paris in about 1 hour 30 minutes. Nantes is about 80 km away.
The château stands on a rocky promontory above the Maine, with walls about one kilometer long and 17 towers, built in bands of pale tuffeau and dark schist. Its Apocalypse series hangs in a dedicated gallery more than 140 meters long. Walk the medieval Cité around the castle and cathedral, then cross to La Doutre for half-timbered houses and the old river port. Summers are warm and sunny, and winters have few frosts or snowfalls.

- Plan the château around the tapestryThe Château d'Angers holds the Apocalypse Tapestry, a medieval work shown in a dedicated gallery. Check the official site for hours, closures and any timed tickets before you plan the morning.Loire Valley
- Take the TGV from Paris MontparnasseAngers-Saint-Laud is about 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 from Paris by TGV, and 40–50 minutes from Nantes by regional train. Fares rise as seats sell, so book early.Nantes
- Taste Anjou wine outside townThe wine villages south of the Loire are easier with a car or a tour than public transport. Book tastings ahead and keep one designated driver.Wine tours
- Do not treat Angers as a day trip from ParisIt works, but you spend about 3.5 hours on trains for a few hours on the ground. Better to stay a night near the château and walk the old quarter once the day-trippers leave.
- Combine with Amboise or SaumurAmboise sits upriver, and Saumur's château and cavalry school are on the Loire between Angers and Tours. Pick one for a second night.Amboise

Is Angers worth visiting?
Yes for the château and tapestry, and as a calmer Loire base. It is a working city, so it feels less touristy than Amboise or Blois. Pair it with Nantes or Saumur rather than a full week.
How many days do you need in Angers?
One day covers the château, the old town and the cathedral. Two days adds a wine tasting in the Anjou villages or a river walk along the Maine.
How do you get from Paris to Angers?
Take the TGV from Paris Montparnasse to Angers-Saint-Laud in about 1.5–1.75 hours. Book early because fares rise, and TER trains link the city to Nantes and Saumur.
What is the Apocalypse Tapestry?
A large medieval tapestry series on the Book of Revelation, displayed in the château. It is the main reason many people stop in Angers, so check the gallery hours before you go.
Is Angers a good base for Loire châteaux?
It suits the western Loire, including Saumur and some Anjou sites. For Chenonceau, Chambord and Amboise, a base in Tours or Amboise is closer.
