The La Tomatina guide

The date and the day

La Tomatina is held in Buñol, a town about 40 km west of Valencia, on the last Wednesday of August: 25 August in 2027. The children's Tomatina is on 21 August. On the day the town's urban area closes to cars at 7am, so you may have to walk the last stretch.

Before the fight there is the palo jabón, a greased pole with a ham on top. Whoever climbs it and grabs the ham keeps it. Then the tomatoes come in on lorries, and the throwing lasts about an hour. The second warning firework ends it, and everyone must stop throwing.

Tickets and what they cost

Entry is by paid ticket. The official site, run by Tomatina Company S.L. of Buñol, sells them as packages with a bus: €55 from Valencia, €105 from Barcelona and €110 from Alicante, Benidorm, Calpe, Denia, Jávea, Madrid and Torrevieja. Extras include paella and sangria, a locker and a party. After you buy, you get a confirmation email: print your tickets and exchange them for the official wristband at your meeting point.

The official booking site is booking.tomatina.es. Customer service is on +34 605 728 297 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, with WhatsApp for text only.

Red cherry tomatoes, La Tomatina
  • No bottles or hard objects.

  • Do not tear or throw T-shirts, yours or anyone else's.

  • Squash tomatoes before throwing them.

  • Keep a safe distance from the lorries.

  • Stop throwing when you hear the second warning firework.

  • Follow security staff.

What to wear and bring

Old clothes you are willing to throw away; a white T-shirt works well. Wear shoes with good grip and avoid flip-flops, which can be lost in the fight. Goggles are recommended because tomato juice can sting your eyes. Use a waterproof camera or a protective case.

If you have children with you, keep them in sight at all times and away from the tomato trucks. The organizers suggest writing a phone number on their arm.

Getting there

The packages include the bus, which is the simplest way to arrive: from Valencia, Barcelona, Alicante, Benidorm, Calpe, Denia, Jávea, Madrid and Torrevieja. If you go on your own, remember that car access to the urban area closes at 7am. The organizers advise arriving early.

Where to sleep

Valencia is the base for the €55 package, and where to stay in Valencia compares five areas by metro time. If you plan to sleep in Buñol, the organizers tell visitors from outside the town to book in advance. Barcelona has its own €105 ticket-and-bus package. See also Valencia in 3 days.
