Norfolk is a county on England's east coast, facing the North Sea. Much of it is flat farmland, but it is best known for the Norfolk Broads, a network of rivers and shallow lakes you can explore by hired boat, and for the north coast, where grey seals gather at Horsey and Blakeney Point. Norwich, the county town, has a Norman castle and a cathedral to see on foot. The Sandringham estate, the royal family's country home, lies in the west.

Norfolk suits slow trips built on water, cycling and driving. A car gives you the most freedom, since coastal villages and Broads moorings are spread out and buses between them run infrequently. Three or four nights in one base works for a short visit, and a week lets you cover the Broads, the coast and Norwich. Late spring to early autumn is the main season for boating and beaches. Seal trips depend on tides, and seal pups are born on the beaches in late autumn and winter.

Norfolk in five

  1. Choose a day on the BroadsThe Broads are Britain's largest protected wetland and have the status of a national park, with rivers and lakes you can explore by hired boat or on a guided cruise. Pick one area rather than trying to cover it all.
  2. Use Norwich as a rail baseTrains run to Norwich from London Liverpool Street and from Cambridge via Ely. Add buses or a car for the coast, since few coastal villages have stations.Cambridge
  3. Walk the north coast, from Holkham to CromerNorfolk has more than 90 miles of coastline, with sandy beaches, cliffs and nature reserves. Check tide times before long beach walks.
  4. See the seals by boatBoat trips run to the seal colony at Blakeney Point and Morston, and grey seal pups appear on beaches in winter. Keep to marked viewing areas and check boat operators' timetables.
  5. Check Sandringham's opening datesThe royal estate's house and gardens open on a seasonal calendar. Look at the estate's official site before you plan a visit.

Norfolk FAQ

How many days do you need in Norfolk?

Three days cover Norwich, the Broads and a north coast beach. Five add seals, Sandringham and a slower pace, and a long weekend works on one base with one day trip.

Is Norfolk worth visiting?

Yes, particularly for beaches, wetlands and wildlife in a flat landscape. It is quieter than the south-west, and it is a good alternative if you want sea and countryside without the crowds.

What are the Norfolk Broads?

A network of rivers and lakes in Norfolk and Suffolk. The Broads Authority describes it as Britain's largest protected wetland, with the status of a national park.

Do you need a car in Norfolk?

A car helps for the coast and for reaching the Broads villages. Trains serve Norwich, Cromer and a few towns, so a car-free trip works around one or two bases.

What is the best time to visit Norfolk?

May to September for beaches and boats, with June and September less crowded. November to January brings seal pups and quiet beaches, but boats and cafés run shorter hours.
