National Museum

Visit Prague’s National Museum for Czech history, natural science collections and a grand Neo-Renaissance interior at the top of Wenceslas Square.

At the upper end of Wenceslas Square in Prague’s New Town, the National Museum pairs Czech history and natural science collections with a grand Neo-Renaissance interior. Look for the sweeping staircase, decorated halls, minerals, animal displays and exhibitions on the country’s past. The museum also has a newer building nearby, connected to the historic one by an underground passage. Choose a few sections if you have limited time: the collections are extensive, and a full visit can take much of the day.

National Museum

The National Museum began in Prague in 1818, when it was known as the Patriotic Museum of Bohemia. Its collections now cover natural and social sciences, history, art and music. The institution includes several museums and sites, while its best-known building stands at the top of Wenceslas Square.

The historic building was designed by Josef Schulz in the Neo-Renaissance style. Construction took place from 1885 to 1890, and the building opened in 1891. Its scale and decoration made it a symbol of the Czech national revival. The museum underwent a major restoration that lasted from 2011 to 2019.

Inside, the grand staircase and halls are part of the visit, not just a route between exhibitions. Look up at the decorated ceilings and the glass cupola, and take time to notice the stonework and other interior details.

Exhibitions cover Czech history as well as natural history. Depending on your interests, you can focus on minerals and gemstones, animal displays, human evolution or the country’s past. Natural history exhibits include a fin whale skeleton and models of extinct animals. Some displays are designed for younger visitors, with interactive elements and replicas they can handle.

The range is broad, so decide what you most want to see before you arrive. Visitors who try to cover both the history and natural history sections may find that each takes several hours.

The newer building and family visits

The museum’s New Building stands beside the historic structure. An underground passage connects the two, making it possible to move between them as part of a visit. Some visitors begin in the newer building, where queues can be shorter, though conditions can differ on the day.

Families can look for child-focused exhibitions and activities. Material in the museum includes displays on prehistory, evolution, Czech history and puppets, as well as a play corner for young visitors. The museum also has a café, though seating there is limited, so plan a break accordingly.
