Visit Prague’s Trade Fair Palace for Czech modern art, works by Picasso and Van Gogh, and a landmark 1920s Functionalist building in Holešovice.

The National Gallery Prague’s Trade Fair Palace is in Holešovice, at Dukelských Hrdinů 530/47. Its spacious galleries bring Czech modern and contemporary art together with works by international artists including Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse and Rodin. Look for Czech Cubist and abstract art, as well as exhibitions that change over time. The palace is a landmark of Functionalist architecture, built as a trade fair venue in the 1920s. Start on the top floor and work down; allow at least three hours to explore the collection.

The Trade Fair Palace, or Veletržní palác, was designed by architects Josef Fuchs and Oldřich Tyl and built between 1925 and 1928. Its original purpose was to host trade fairs. Today, its monumental Functionalist design houses the National Gallery Prague’s modern and contemporary art collection.

The palace is one of several buildings used by the National Gallery. The gallery’s collections span different periods and are displayed at sites around Prague, so this branch is the one to choose for modern and contemporary art.

The collection brings Czech artists into conversation with international painters and sculptors. You can encounter works by Josef Mánes, Josef Navrátil and Bohumil Kubišta alongside names such as Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse and Auguste Rodin.

Czech Cubism, abstraction and other strands of modern art are a particular reason to spend time here. The displays include a range of styles, from Symbolism and Art Deco to later work. The collection also includes pieces by artists such as Alfons Mucha, František Kupka and Josef Lada.

Exhibitions at the palace include both ongoing displays and temporary shows. The museum’s programme can change, so check the National Gallery Prague website if you have a particular exhibition in mind.

Planning your visit

The building is large, and the collection takes time to explore. Start at the top and work down through the galleries; allow at least three hours for a substantial visit. The palace has a coat check, restrooms and a restaurant, and its entrance and restrooms are wheelchair accessible.

If you want a keepsake, the gift shop sells items including posters, books, cards and glasses cloths. Tickets in advance are recommended. The gallery is closed on Mondays and open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
