Rovinj sits on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula in western Croatia, facing the north Adriatic. It is a beach resort and an active fishing port at once. The old town was once an island, and the channel to the mainland was filled in only in 1763. The Baroque Church of St Euphemia, built from 1728 to 1736, dominates the skyline, and its bell tower was modeled on the campanile in Venice's St Mark's Square. Venice ruled the town from 1283 until 1797.
The town is officially bilingual in Croatian and Italian, so town names and signs appear in both languages. Peak season runs from May to September, when bars, restaurants and galleries stay open long hours. The sea is warmer than 20 °C from mid-June to September, and summer beds are often overbooked, so book ahead. Pula is 40 km away, and in summer a direct ferry from Venice takes about 2.5 hours one way.
Rovinj in five
- Climb the St. Euphemia bell tower before sunsetThe campanile rises 62 m above the old town, with about 192 irregular but sturdy steps. The tourist board suggests going 30 to 45 minutes before sunset for light over the islands and Lim Bay.Rovinj in 2 days
- Walk the old town early, in flat shoesThe old town once stood on its own island, and the channel was filled in during 1763. It has no cars, and the tourist board warns that polished limestone turns slippery after rain.
- Swim in Golden Cape Forest ParkThe 120 ha park south of the harbor was planted from 1890 and has bays at Lone and Škaraba. The tourist board calls Lone Bay the most visited town bathing spot, so go in the morning.
- Take the hourly boats to the islandsBoats to St. Andrew and St. Catherine run hourly from the center, roughly 15 and 5 minutes by the tourist board's figures. Check the last return before you land.

Rovinj FAQ
How many days do you need in Rovinj?
Two days cover the old town, the tower, the Golden Cape and an island boat. A single day suits a stop between Poreč and Pula; a third day opens Lim Bay or Dvigrad.
Is Rovinj worth visiting?
Yes for a photogenic old town, swimming from rocky coves and a calm pace out of season. It gets crowded in July and August, so shoulder months work better for walking.
Is Rovinj better than Pula?
Rovinj is smaller and prettier for evenings and swimming. Pula has the Roman Arena and more day-to-day city life. Many trips use Rovinj as a base and visit Pula for a day.
Where should you stay in Rovinj?
In the old town for atmosphere, near the Golden Cape for forest and coves, or at Kuvi Bay for resort facilities. The where-to-stay guide compares the four main choices.
Does Rovinj have sandy beaches?
Mostly rocky and pebbly coves, with flat rocks at the Golden Cape and gravel at Kuvi Bay. For sand, choose another coast; for clear water and shade, the Golden Cape works well.
