Poreč is a town on the western coast of Istria, the peninsula in northwestern Croatia. Its best-known sight is the Euphrasian Basilica, a sixth-century church with gold-ground mosaics that is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old town still follows a Roman street plan. Beside it, a resort coast of hotels, paths and swimming areas runs along the Adriatic, and several beaches carry Blue Flag status.
The swimming season runs from late spring to early autumn, and July and August are the busiest months. Allow a few days for the basilica and the old town. Day trips go to Rovinj, a harbor town to the south, and to Pula, the largest city in Istria, where the Roman amphitheater is the main draw. Stay in the old town to walk to the basilica, or on the resort coast for the beaches and paths.

Is Poreč worth visiting?
Yes for a beach-led stay with a real old town, a UNESCO basilica and easy roads to Rovinj and Pula. It is less intimate than Rovinj, with more resort infrastructure along the coast.
How many days do you need in Poreč?
One day covers the old town and the basilica. Three or four days suit a beach stay with a day trip to Rovinj or Pula. A week works for families who want one base and many options.
Is Poreč or Rovinj better?
Poreč is better for beaches, families and resort facilities. Rovinj is better for atmosphere, evenings and photography. Many travelers stay in one and visit the other.
When was the Euphrasian Basilica inscribed by UNESCO?
In 1997, according to the Poreč tourist board. The basilica was built in the first half of the 6th century on the remains of an earlier three-nave church.
Does Poreč have good beaches?
The tourist board says it has 21 Blue Flag beaches along 37 km of coast, mixing sand, pebbles and stone. Choose by facilities: some are family beaches, others are quiet coves.
