Mali Lošinj is the main town on Lošinj, a long, narrow island in the Kvarner Gulf of the Adriatic, in Croatia. Its harbor is lined with houses that sea captains built, and the waterfront still shows the island's seafaring past. The Apoxyomenos Museum holds a Roman copy of a Greek bronze of an athlete scraping oil from his skin. The statue was pulled from the sea near the island in 1999.

The town suits a slow seaside stay. Days go to walks on the pine-shaded promenades, swimming, and boat trips to nearby islands such as Ilovik and Susak. Boats also run from Rijeka, Zadar and Pula. Cres is reachable by road over the Osor bridge, so a day trip is an option for drivers. Late spring through early autumn is the main season for swimming and boats. Two or three nights covers the town and one island day, and a week gives a slower pace.

Mali Lošinj FAQ

Is Mali Lošinj worth visiting?

Yes for a quiet harbor town, a good museum and nearby islands. It is not a party base, so choose it for slow days and swimming.

How do you get to Mali Lošinj?

By road via Cres and the Osor bridge, or by catamaran from Rijeka, Pula or Zadar. Jadrolinija lists the Rijeka line at 4 h 30 min for the full run.

What is the Apoxyomenos Museum?

A museum built around a bronze statue of an athlete, with hours Tuesday to Sunday and closure on Mondays. Individual admission is 15 EUR from Easter to 1 November, and no booking is needed unless you come with a group of 10 or more.

Cres or Lošinj?

Lošinj has more facilities, a bigger harbor town and an easier base. Cres is wilder with hill villages and fewer services. Combine them by driving across the Osor bridge.

When is the best time to visit Mali Lošinj?

June and September give warm water without the peak crowds. July and August are busiest. Spring and early autumn suit walking, with shorter museum hours from mid October.
