Liberia is the main city of Guanacaste, the dry northwestern province of Costa Rica, near the Nicaraguan border. It is the region's commercial center and the usual airport for visitors flying into the region, Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR). The historic center is known as the White City.
Most trips use Liberia as a base. It is the starting point for drives to Guanacaste's Pacific beaches and to volcano parks such as Rincón de la Vieja, and a longer drive for La Fortuna near Arenal. The dry season, roughly December through April, is the usual time to visit the region. A night or two in town suits travelers who land late or leave early, while a full day or two gives you time to see the city itself and sort out a rental car before heading out.

- Carry proof of onward travel before you boardCosta Rica's tourism board lists a valid passport, proof of funds of at least US$100 per month of stay, and a return or onward ticket among the entry requirements. Immigration may ask to see them.Visas and entry
- Watch your flight status for LiberiaUK government advice says services at Liberia airport have been subject to interruptions, so monitor your airline's information, and keep the first night's booking flexible.
- Book the rental car before you landBeach roads, park gates and the drive to La Fortuna all assume a vehicle. Reserve online, check the excess and the fuel policy.Renting a car abroad
- Sleep in town only for early or late flightsThe White City has colonial lanes and restaurants, but beaches and parks are the main draw. A town night makes sense before a dawn departure or after a late landing, not as a trip highlight.
- Decide your first drive before the arrivals hallBeaches lie to the west, Rincón de la Vieja to the north-east and La Fortuna to the east. Pick one, and save the others for the return, so the first evening does not become a night drive on unfamiliar roads.Northwestern Costa Rica

Should I fly into Liberia or San José for La Fortuna?
Liberia if you also want the northwest beaches or want to skip the capital, since the drive to La Fortuna is roughly 3 hours. San José suits routes that continue to Monteverde, the Pacific coast or the Caribbean.
Is Liberia worth a night?
Only as a practical stop. The White City has colonial buildings and restaurants, but the beaches and parks are the draw. Use it before a dawn flight or after a late landing, not as a base.
Do I need a rental car at Liberia airport?
For beach towns, park gates and La Fortuna, a car is the easy answer. Shuttles and tours serve some beach and La Fortuna routes if you book ahead, but they rarely reach park gates or unpaved side roads.
Is there a departure tax at Liberia airport?
UK government advice says you may need to pay a departure tax of 29 US dollars when leaving by air, though most airlines include it in the ticket. Check your fare breakdown, and keep a card for the desk.
How early should I arrive for a flight from Liberia?
Follow your airline's guidance. Add margin for the rental return and the drive, because park roads and beach roads are slower than distance suggests, and airport services have faced interruptions.
