Guanacaste is a province in northwestern Costa Rica on the Pacific coast, bordering Nicaragua to the north. Its capital is Liberia, about 210 km from San José. Liberia's airport, named after Daniel Oduber, is the province's international gateway, with flights from North America and Europe. The province has more than 640 km of coastline, and the Nicoya Peninsula, the largest peninsula in Costa Rica, lies to the southwest and encloses the Gulf of Nicoya.

Guanacaste is considered Costa Rica's leading tourist destination, known for beaches, dry forests, volcanoes, rivers and national parks. Santa Rosa National Park, created in 1973, is the oldest national park in the province. The dry season runs from November to May, with little rain and strong heat, and it is the best time for beach holidays. From May to October, showers fall on most days. Lowland temperatures range from about 20 to 33 °C. The province is the most sparsely populated in Costa Rica.

Guanacaste FAQ

When is the dry season in Guanacaste?

Roughly December to April, when rain is rare. The green season from May to November brings afternoon storms, with September and October the wettest.

Which airport is best for Guanacaste?

Liberia (LIR). It is close to the beaches, while San José is about 4 hours away.

Do I need a 4x4 in Guanacaste?

Not for the main roads, but many beach and side roads are unpaved, and a 4x4 helps in the rainy months.

How many days do you need in Guanacaste?

Four to seven days for a beach base plus one volcano or forest day. Pick one or two beach towns rather than many, because distances on rough roads add up.

Is Guanacaste worth visiting in the rainy season?

Yes, with a plan. Mornings are often clear and the green season brings fewer visitors, but September and October are the wettest and some unpaved roads are hard to drive without a 4x4.
